At around 12:11 a.m. local time, police received reports of a wrong-way driver on the interstate. The person drove south in the northbound lanes near exit 3.
Moments later, the driver crashed into another vehicle with four occupants. The northbound vehicle burst into flames on impact, reports CBS Boston.
The four occupants in the car and the lone wrong-way driver died in the collision.
Police say the car carrying four people did not have sufficient time to react to the wrong-way driver. Firefighters that arrived first on the scene encountered a giant ball of fire where the car burned, according to the Boston Globe.
The identities of the deceased have not been released. According to the Boston Globe, the wrong-way driver appeared to be a woman in her 30s.
