According to WCHL, a five-year-old boy suffered from fatal injuries after he was hit by a construction vehicle that rolled away from its operator in Hillsborough, North Carolina, on Monday afternoon.

Details of Fatal Accident

The accident occurred on Dogwood Bloom Lane in the Forest Ridge subdivision at around 1:00 p.m. local time. Officials say construction worker Alejandro Suarez left the dump truck he was operating unrestrained, allowing it to roll free down the hill. The truck crashed through and snapped power lines before striking a boy playing in his driveway.

WCHL reports that the boy was transported to Duke University Hospital before succumbing to his injuries. The truck was being loaded with dirt when it rolled away from the work site. Several houses on the road were damaged, including the house that the dump truck crashed into at 205 Dogwood Bloom Lane.

Officials believe the vehicle was not secured properly, reports WCHL. An investigation is ongoing into the mechanical condition of the vehicle and the company the construction crew was working for. Suarez was determined to be the man responsible for the truck and is being charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle.
