Florida Motorcyclist Killed in Wreck involving SUV

According to ABC Action News, a motorcyclist suffered fatal injuries after being hit by a vehicle in St. Petersburg, Florida, on Tuesday morning.

Details of Fatal Motorcycle Accident

Patricia N. Stevenson drove her SUV south on 66th Street North when she attempted to turn left onto 30th Avenue North. James V. Redner-Gilmartin was riding his motorcycle north on 66th Street North at around 10:25 p.m. local time when the fatal crash happened.

Redner-Gilmartin was behind another vehicle and out of the sight of Stevenson when he was hit by the SUV. Police say Redner-Gilmartin changed lanes shortly before the fatal crash.

ABC Action News reports that Redner-Gilmartin died at the scene. He was not wearing a helmet. Stevenson was injured in the wreck and transported to the hospital. Police are continuing to investigate the car-motorcycle wreck.

Motorcycle Crash Statistics

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), 4,295 motorcyclists died in crashes in 2014. Here is additional information regarding motorcycle crashes:

  • Helmets are about 37 percent effective in preventing motorcycle deaths and about 67 percent effective in preventing brain injuries.
  • Only 19 states and the District of Columbia require helmet use by all riders.
  • 30 percent of motorcyclists killed in 2014 were under the age of 30.
