Heavy Fog Forces Critical Traffic Delays, Pileups and Crashes

Damaged car from an accident with responding ambulance

Drivers traveling on the I-68 in Maryland around mile marker 29 near Frostburg were met with limited visibility, vehicle crashes, and traffic jams.

About the Car Crash and Pileup on I-68

According to WUSA 9, a major car pile-up, multiple crashes, and traffic delays recently occurred in Maryland. 58 cars were involved in these sudden mishaps on the I-68 the Sunday, December 1st.

The cause of all this mayhem was surprisingly due to a heavy fog. Maryland State Police (MSP) have reported the thick fog being the catalyst a pileup involving 29 different collisions amongst over 50 cars. The car crash incidents were so severe, that they delayed traffic for approximately 6 miles. Roads were immediately closed during this time period from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The MSP have also stated that ten people were sent to Western Maryland Health System residing in Cumberland, Maryland. Fortunately, these victims did not harbor serious, life threatening injuries.

Tips for Driving in Fog

  1. Use low beam headlights to fog lights- High beams reduce visibility even more
  2. Slow down driving speeds
  3. Use visible pavement markings as guides to stay in your lane while driving
  4. Try not to stop on the road- Others may not see you parked until it is too late
