The fatal auto accident in Houston occurred in front of MacArthur High School in the 4400 block of Aldine Mail Route at around 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday. Jose Torres, 17, crossed half of the five-lane road and stood in the turn lane into his school.

A woman in a green pickup truck with her child pulled into the turn lane, striking and killing the high school student. KHOU reports that investigators believe the woman was speeding when she struck Torres.

KHOU interviewed several locals in the area who said drivers always speed through the school zone near MacArthur. Investigators believe the woman was traveling at around 35 to 40 mph, or nearly twice the legal speed limit in the school zone. In addition, the nearest crosswalk is a quarter-mile away from the school in both directions. Torres was not in a crosswalk when he was killed.

Torres lived across the street from the school, reports KHOU. Police say they are investigating whether the school zone lights were functioning correctly at the time of the fatal crash.
