Hospital Admits Misdiagnosis Contributed to Pregnant Woman’s Death

The family of Rebecca Ben-Nejma has received compensation for misdiagnosing an eptopic pregnancy, leading to Mrs. Ben-Nejma’s death in December of 2010.

According to the Daily Mail, the undisclosed six figure sum was paid in response to Maidstone Hospital staff misdiagnosing Mrs. Ben-Nejma twice, contributing to the death of her and her unborn child.

Hospital Misdiagnosis Ectopic Pregnancy

  • Rebecca Ben-Nejma, seven weeks pregnant, went to Maidstone Hospital with complaints of stomach pain.
  • Hospital staff diagnosed her with gastroenteritis and sent her home with painkillers.
  • Evidently, one doctor wanted her to be scanned to rule out the possibility of her symptoms being from an ectopic pregnancy, but the hospitals scanning department was closed for the weekend.
  • Mrs. Ben-Nejma returned the hospital the next day with concerns of severe stomach pain where she was again was sent home with painkiller by hospital staff.
  • Three days later, Rebecca Ben-Nejma suffered a heart attack and later died. She was found to have an ectopic pregnancy.

Hospital Changes Policy in Wake of Death

In response to Mrs. Ben-Nejma’s death, the hospital now has made scanning equipment and senior medical staff in women’s and children’s services available 24 hours a day and on weekends.
