Hunt County DA Faces Criminal Investigation After Crossing Guard’s Death

Hunt County District Attorney Noble Walker is under criminal investigation following a fatal accident that claimed the life of a claimed the life of a school crossing guard earlier this month.

Details of the Crossing Guard’s Death

According to WFAA, the crash occurred around 7 am on March 29 when a vehicle driven by Walker struck 87-year-old Christine Sandlin at the intersection of Stonewall Street and Poplar Street.  Sandlin was transported to the hospital, but succumbed to her injuries on April 11.

According to a crash report, failure to yield the right of way to a pedestrian was a contributing factor to the incident. The report also noted that the area was dark and rainy at the time of the accident, and witness reports suggest Sandlin was wearing a reflective vest.

Walker remained at the scene following the crash and admitted his involvement publicly Monday.

Texas Traffic Accident Statistics

  • The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) recorded 3,531 traffic-related deaths in 2015. This marked little change from the 3,536 deaths reported in 2014.
  • 807 deaths were attributed to accidents that occurred at or in relation to intersections, and pedestrian deaths totaled 550 in 2015.
  • An additional 246,335 people were injured in traffic accidents in Texas in 2015.
  • Based on reportable crash data for 2015, TxDOT estimates:
    • One person was killed every 2 hours and 29 minutes.
    • One person was injured every 2 minutes and 8 seconds.
    • A reportable crash occurred every 61 seconds.
