Officers say Andrea Huerta, 19, the driver of a black Nissan, lost control of her vehicle which then hit a guardrail. Huerta was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators do not believe she was wearing a seat belt.
The Nissan also hit a gold Ford Taurus that was also traveling east on I-40. The driver of the Taurus, Christian Hernando-Castillo, tried to flee the scene on foot and was arrested shortly after by Knoxville Police Department officers.
Castillo, 18, is charged with failure to report a crash, no proof of insurance, leaving the scene of an accident involving death, and driving without a driver’s license. He is being detained at the Roger D. Wilson Detention Facility.
Three lanes of I-40 were closed through the night while officers investigated the crash. All lanes of the interstate are now back open. KPD‘s Crash Reconstruction Investigators are continuing to investigate.
