Lanes Closed After 18-Wheeler Catches Fire on Harbor Bridge


Several lanes of the Harbor Bridge were closed Thursday after an 18-wheeler caught fire where Highway 181 meets the Harbor Bridge.

Authorities Investigate Harbor Bridge Accident

According to KRIS-TV, two large trucks were involved in the crash. The drivers of both vehicles were able to escape the fiery crash.

Police say the tanker that caught fire was carrying crude oil. Upon arriving to the scene, firefighters worked immediately to extinguish the blaze.

Motorists are advised northbound I-37 from Shoreline Boulevard to Highway 181, the Joe Fulton Corridor, or the Port Aransas Ferry as alternate routes to Portland.

Texas Trucking Accident Statistics

The following information was provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NTHSA):

  • 438,000 trucking accidents were recorded in the U.S. in 2014, resulting in 3,903 deaths and 111,000 injuries.
  • Of those killed in trucking accidents:
    • 17 percent were occupants of large trucks
    • 73 percent were occupants of other vehicles
    • 10 percent were listed as nonoccupants, including bicyclists and pedestrians
  • Texas led the nation in trucking accident fatalities with 553 trucking-related deaths reported. California followed Texas with 300 recorded deaths.
