Leander Man Killed in Motorcycle Crash
19-year-old Cody Hilgart was killed Monday night after a passenger vehicle pulled out in front of the motorcycle. This marked the fifth motorcycle-related fatality to be recorded in the Austin metro area over a seven-day span.
Details of the Fatal Motorcycle Accident
According to the Hill Country News, Hilgart was traveling southbound along U.S. 183 around 9:30 pm when a Kia sedan traveling the opposite direction made a left hand turn in front of the motorcycle. Hilgart was unable to avoid the sedan.
Hilgart was pronounced dead at the scene – police say he was wearing a helmet when the collision occurred. The driver of the sedan, Taras Mahoe, 46, was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Earlier that day, a female motorcyclist was killed when she was struck by a car attempting to make a left turn from RM 2222 onto Vaught Ranch Road.
Texas Motorcycle Accident Statistics
- 495 motorcyclists were killed in traffic collisions in 2013. 53-percent of those killed were wearing helmets when the crash occurred.
- In 2014 there were a total of 13 motorcycle fatalities recorded in the Austin area with only three deaths being recorded between January 1 and April 1.
- Of the five motorcyclists killed in the Austin metro area so far this year, only one was not wearing a helmet.
