A Liberty County Pct. Constable was critically injured Wednesday after being struck by a vehicle while directing traffic.
According to KHOU, Constable Justin Johnston was directing traffic with six other officers when he was struck by a driver that ignored police barricades. He was flown to Memorial Hermann Hospital where he was taken into brain surgery with a brain bleed.
Johnston had stopped traffic in the southbound lanes of Highway 146 at FM 1413 to allow cars out of a nearby parking lot when a pickup truck drove along the shoulder of the road, plowed through barricades, and struck the constable.
Captain Ken DeFoor of the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office noted all of the officers had their vehicles’ emergency lights on and the barricade was clearly visible.
A 7-year-old child was in the truck at the time of the incident and stained minor injuries. Johnston remains in the ICU and is listed in critical condition.
Sheriff’s deputies lined up in front of the hospital Wednesday night in a show of solidarity and support for Constable Johnston and his family.
