According to The Salem News, a man is facing drunk driving charges after striking a mother and her ten-year-old twin daughters in downtown Salem, Massachusetts.

Driver Tossed Beer Cans after Wreck

Dexter Mitchell, 52, crashed into the three pedestrians while they crossed Bridge Street heading toward downtown Salem at around 8:00 p.m. local time. After striking the mother and twins, Mitchell fled the scene of the wreck.

Witnesses say Mitchell pulled into a parking lot nearby and dumped a partially empty 12-pack of beer into a dumpster, according to The Salem News. He then parked and approached an officer directing traffic, telling him that he was the driver in the pedestrian crash.

Mitchell faces charges including drunken driving causing serious injury, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, and failing to yield to a pedestrian. He plead not guilty to these charges on Monday, reports The Salem News.

The mother and twins sustained serious injuries in the crash. Media sources report that the injuries are non-life-threatening.
