Man Dead after Evading Police, Crashing Stolen Car

According to the Star Gazette, a man died after crashing a stolen car head-on into another vehicle following a police chase in Corning, New York, on Wednesday.

Man Attempted to Steal Cart of Merchandise

The man, identified as 35-year-old Adam M. VanCise, reportedly tried to steal a cart full of items from a local Walmart before being approached by security. VanCise fled to a nearby JoAnn Fabric’s parking lot where he stole a woman’s car around 8:40 a.m. local time.

The Star Gazette reports that two sheriff’s pursued VanCise west on County Route 64. State troopers joined the pursuit as it continued onto State Route 352 into Steuben County.

Officials stopped the pursuit after VanCise made a potentially risky and dangerous maneuver. According to the Star Gazette, VanCise started driving west in eastbound lanes on County Route 352 near Goff Road. In addition, police say VanCise traveled at high rates of speed during the chase.

Police officers soon after came upon the scene of the accident – VanCise crashed head-on into an SUV traveling eastbound near the Corning Country Club. VanCise was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck.

Two people in the SUV sustained non-life-threatening injuries and received treatment at Robert Packer Hospital.
