Man Dies, Woman Injured After 18-Wheeler Overturns Onto SUV

A man was killed and his wife was airlifted to a trauma center Friday after a tractor-trailer overturned and landed on top of their vehicle.

Details of the Fatal Trucking Accident

WITN reports that the 18-wheeler was heading north on Highway 11 in Lenoir County, North Carolina when a second tractor-trailer pulled in front of it. The first 18-wheeler swerved to avoid the second but clipped the second 18-wheeler’s trailer.

The first 18-wheeler then hit an SUV that was topped at a stop sign and overturned on to the vehicle.

Stacy Smith, 68, was killed in the accident. His wife, 48-year-old Melissa Smith, was freed from the wreckage and flown to Vidant Medical Center.

The driver of the second tractor-trailer, Steven Brunt, 20, has been charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle.

  • 438,000 large trucks were involved in police-reported traffic accidents in 2014.
  • Trucking accidents killed 3,903 people and injured 111,000 others in 2014.
  • Of those killed in trucking accidents:
    • 17 percent were occupants of large trucks
    • 73 percent were occupants of other vehicles
    • 10 percent were nonoccupants including pedestrians and bicyclists
  • Texas led the nation in trucking-related deaths with 553 fatalities reported. Texas was followed by California with 300 fatalities reported.
