Over the past several years, recalls of dangerous tainted meats have gone up by more than 80%.
According to CBS News, the number of recalls pertaining to meat and poultry have increased by 83 percent over the past six years.
Researchers tracking the trend found that that contamination of the hazardous meats often started at the source, the farms.
“Something is rotten in our slaughterhouses and our fields, and so common sense protections from farm to fork can help prevent that,” says a researcher from U.S. Public Interest Research Group.
Processed meats were considered to be at the greatest risk of contamination.
Tainted meats can cause severe health risks, which may very well change your life. Every year, contaminated foods result in tens of thousands of illnesses and at least 3,000 deaths, 450 of which are attributed to salmonella alone.
Fortunately, there has been great improvements in detecting tainted meats, resulting in increased recalls.
