Michigan State Rep. Killed in Motorcycle Accident

According to several news outlets, three-term Republican state Representative Peter Pettalia was killed on Monday evening after a motorcycle accident on M-33 South in Montmorency County.

Pettalia had Long Career of Service, says Governor

Pettalia’s death was confirmed by legislative leaders, but no additional details regarding the accident have been released. Michigan State Police and Montmorency County sheriff’s dispatcher say a statement would be released at a later time, according to several news sources.

News outlets report that Pettalia was on his way to Lansing for Tuesday’s legislative session when the accident occurred. Pettalia, a longtime resident of Presque Isle, leaves behind his wife, Karen, and two adult children.

Governor Rick Snyder issued a statement praising Pettalia for his years of service and time as a volunteer firefighter and township supervisor.

Motorcycle Crash Statistics

The following information is provided by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

  • 4,295 motorcyclists died in crashes in 2014.
    • Ninety-two percent of motorcyclists killed in 2014 were males.
  • Helmets are about 37 percent effective in preventing motorcycle deaths and about 67 percent effective in preventing brain injuries.
    • Only 19 states and the District of Columbia mandate helmet use by all riders.
  • Per mile traveled in 2014, the number of deaths on motorcycles was over 27 times the number in cars.
