Motorcyclist Killed after Colliding with 18-Wheeler


According to WTAE, a young man on a motorcycle died on Tuesday morning after crashing into the rear of an 18-wheeler on Route 66 in Washington Township, Pennsylvania.

Man’s Death Ruled an Accident 

The accident occurred at approximately 6:30 a.m. on Route 66. The 18-wheeler was slowing to turn left onto Route 366 when the motorcyclist slammed into the back of the truck.

Anthony J. Reefer, 23, was pronounced dead at the scene, reports WTAE. He suffered from blunt force trauma to the head, neck, and chest area. Police report that Reefer was wearing a helmet.

According to WTAE, several witnesses told police that Reefer was speeding before the crash occurred.

Motorcycle Crash Statistics 

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), per mile traveled in 2014, the number of deaths on motorcycles was over 27 times the number of cars. In addition,

  • A total of 4,295 motorcyclists died in crashes in 2014.
    • Motorcycle deaths accounted for 13 percent of all motor vehicle crash deaths in 2014.
  • 58 percent of motorcyclist deaths in 2014 occurred in multiple-vehicle crashes.
  • 30 percent of the fatally injured motorcyclists in 2014 were younger than age 30
    • In 1975, 80 percent of fatally injured motorcyclists were younger than 30.
  • In 2014, 62 percent of fatally injured motorcycle drivers were helmeted.
  • Ninety-two percent of motorcyclists killed in 2014 were males.
