Motorcyclist Killed in Multi-Vehicle Crash

Texas authorities are investigating a multi-vehicle crash that left a 62-year-old motorcyclist dead Friday morning.

Motorcyclist Was Struck by Several Vehicles

KXAN reports that Arthur Thomas Simmons, 62, was killed Friday morning after he was struck by a car traveling westbound on Highway 79 as he attempted turn eastbound. Several other vehicles were unable to avoid Simmons after the initial collision and ran over the motorcyclist.

At least four vehicles were involved in the crash, including the motorcycle. Further details of the crash were not immediately available.

Westbound Highway 79 was closed to traffic for roughly three hours following the fatal crash.

Texas Motorcycle Accident Statistics

  • The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) recorded 3,773 traffic-related deaths in 2016. This marked a 5.45% increase from the 3,578 deaths reported in 2015.
  • Motorcyclists accounted for 496 of the fatalities recorded in 2016.
  • Authorities determined that the majority (53%) of motorcyclists killed in 2016 were not wearing helmets a the time of their collision.
