Details of the Fatal San Manuel Accident

Luis Colon, 48, an IDEA Public Schools employee was killed in an overnight car wreck in San Manuel, Texas on July 16, reports krgv.com.

Colon was driving south on 281 in a 2013 Chevrolet IDEA school van accompanied by another employee when the driver lost control of the vehicle and hit a palm tree. Texas Department of Public Safety investigators believe that fatigue may have been a contributing factor to the accident.

The driver died at the scene and the passenger was transported to Doctor’s Hospital at Renaissance with minor injuries.

Fatigue Driving Accident Statistics

  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimate that “drowsy driving” is the cause of at least 2.5% of fatal crashes and 2% of injury crashes annually. These numbers are conservative because drowsy driving may cause up to 5,000 or 6,000 crashes a year.
  • In a study of 150,000 adults in 19 states, 4.2% said that they had fallen asleep at the wheel at least once in the past 30 days.
  • Drowsy driving makes drivers less attentive, compromises the ability to make decisions, and slows reaction time.
  • Commercial drivers, shift drivers, and individuals who do not get adequate sleep are most likely to drive in a fatigued state.
