Northbrook Maintenance Worker Fatally Crushed by Lawn Mower

A maintenance worker was killed Saturday afternoon after being pinned under a large lawn mower at a Northbrook, Illinois country club.

About the Fatal Lawn Mower Accident

According to WSL-AM, Richard Bowden, 62, was riding a commercial mower at the Greenacre Country Club when the mower tipped over into an embankment. Bowden was pinned underneath it.

An autopsy conducted on Sunday revealed the Bowden died of traumatic asphyxia while he was pinned under the mower. Blunt force injuries were also considered a contributing factor in his death.

A similar accident occurred in a nearby suburb just eight days prior to Bowden’s death. In that incident, a water department employee was pinned under water by a mower in Hanover Park.

On the Job Accident Statistics

  • The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recorded 4,836 work-related deaths in 2015. This averages to more than 13 deaths each day.
  • Of those deaths, 4,379 occurred in private industry.
  • Among the leading causes of work-related fatalities were:
    • Falls
    • Electrocutions
    • Struck by object
    • Caught-in/between
