San Antonio Nursing Home Accused of Leaving Elders Helpless

nursing home negligence

The Commissioner of Precinct 4, Tommy Calvert, has been battling to ensure the lives of nursing home residents are adequately cared for during the outbreak of pandemic.

About the San Antonio Nursing Home Allegations

According KENS-5, Commissioner Tommy Calvert recently pleaded with Judge Nelson Wolff of Bexar County to have the nursing home residents of Southeast Nursing and Rehabilitation Center transported to Texas Center for Infectious Disease. The primary cause of this plea is due to the belief that the residents are not being properly cared for since the facility is currently understaffed.

17 residents have already died due to the infectious virus outbreak in that location. Calvert presented evidence from the nursing home’s staffing sheets showing reports of only 2 nurses and 1 nurse assistant caring for over 50 elders affected by COVID-19.

In response to this the Metro Health Director, Dawn Emerick, deployed a team to investigate the nursing home facility in San Antonio. Emerick stated that there was indeed adequate staffing. Several lawyers also came to the aid of the facility to defend against Calvert’s claims.

They refuted Calvert’s claims by saying everyone was well taken care of and the allegations made against the facility were thoughtless and false. Nevertheless, Calvert wants Judge Wolff to sanction the nursing home owners for not providing food and care to employees among residents.

The facility has been cited for 28 health code violations last October 2019.

Signs of Nursing Home Abuse and Neglect

According to the National Council on Aging (NCOA), there are certain signs of elder abuse and neglect to keep an eye out for. If your loved one is showing any of these signs, it may be time to report the incident. Signs of elder abuse and neglect include:

  • Physical signs: bruises, broken bones, burns
  • Emotional signs: withdrawal from normal activities, unusual depression, frequent arguments with caregiver
  • Neglect signs: bedsores, lack of medical treatment, poor hygiene
  • Sudden change in financial situations (sign of financial abuse)

Abused elders are at a 300 percent higher risk of death compared to those who have not been abused. It is important to recognize elder abuse and neglect early to prevent further tragedies from occurring.
