According to News Channel 10, the Agrium plant in Border, TX was evacuated last Thursday due to a toxic gas leak.
Details of the Industrial Accident
Although evacuation policies were properly followed, the toxic gas, ammonia, still affected over a dozen employees.
The gas release resulted from a sight glass failure on an ammonia pump. Of the ten employees sent to the hospital, two remain and are reportedly doing well.
According to officials, the gas release is not going to impact the community.
Oil and Gas Industry Injury Statistics
The following information was provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS):
- There were about 1,400 nonfatal injuries and illnesses in gas extraction activities.
- There were 2.1 injury cases per every 100 full-time workers.
- Between 2007 and 2011, Texas saw 199 oil and gas industry fatalities.
