One Dead in Fiery Trucking Accident on I-37

Officials have confirmed that one person was killed in a fiery trucking accident near Corpus Christi Friday afternoon.

Details of the Trucking Accident

According to KRIS-TV, the accident occurred when the 18-wheeler overcorrected after drifting to the right shoulder of the road. The tractor-trailer then veered into the center median before going off the roadway and down an embankment.

Emergency crews arrived to the scene and were able to extinguish the flames; however, the driver was killed in the crash.

All northbound lanes remained open, but responders closed all southbound lanes except for one. The incident remains under investigation.

The following information was provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA):

  • 3,903 people were killed in trucking accidents in 2014, marking a slight decrease from the 3,981 fatalities reported in 2013.
  • Of those killed in trucking accidents in 2014:
    • 17 percent were occupants of large trucks
    • 73 percent were occupants of other vehicles
    • 10 percent were non-occupants including pedestrians and bicyclists
  • An additional 111,000 people were injured in trucking accidents in 2014.
  • Texas lead the nation in trucking accident fatalities in 2014 with 439 deaths recorded. California followed Texas with 267 deaths.
