The accident occurred on Interstate 20 as the Iraan High School cheerleading team drove back to Iraan following their game in Colorado City. The bus was about 120 miles from Iraan when the bus collided with a tractor-trailer between mile marker 174 and 176.
According to CBS 7, the semi crossed into oncoming traffic while attempting to avoid another wreck when it slammed into the school bus.
The Dallas Morning News reports that the adult sponsor, Liz Pope, 52, died from injuries sustained in the wreck. Seven others were transported to Scenic Mountain Medical Center for treatment. The conditions of the patients ranged from critical to serious condition, and four of the victims were being taken to a different hospital for treatment.
According to CBS 7, one of the injured is the bus driver, Christina Garlock, who is listed in serious but stable condition at University Medical Center in Lubbock. Officials say the roads were wet and the visibility in the area was poor at the time of the crash.
