One Dead, Several Hospitalized in Multi-car Wreck in San Francisco

severely damaged car following crash

According to ABC 7 News, one man is dead and several other motorists were hospitalized in a four-vehicle collision at a busy San Francisco intersection on Thursday morning.

Street Shut Down for Investigation

A man in an SUV barreled down Divisadero Street at around 60 mph when the fatal crash occurred. The driver blew through a red light at the intersection of Lombard Street, crashing into a car and causing a massive debris field involving two other vehicles.

ABC 7 News reports that paramedics attempted to save the life of the SUV driver, administering CPR for 15 minutes. The man would ultimately succumb to his injuries. Other drivers were transported to the hospital, and ABC 7 News reports that two others were injured in the fatal collision.

Witnesses say the car that the SUV struck was left in a mass of twisted metal and that the car was launched 30 feet after the collision. Police say the crash may have been caused by a faulty accelerator pedal that was stuck, causing the SUV to travel at high speeds and run the red light, according to ABC 7 News.

Officials closed down streets in the area, causing major traffic gridlock at one of the busiest intersections in the city as the investigation continued.
