One Dead, Two Injured in Chemical Plant Explosion Near Houston

At least one person is dead and two others are injured following an explosion and fire at a chemical plant in Crosby, Texas, about 25 miles northwest of Houston.

Shelter in Place Issued After Crosby Plant Explosion

According to reports, residents within a 1-mile radius of the chemical plant have been ordered to shelter in place as crews respond to and investigate the scene.

The explosion occurred Tuesday morning at the KMCO plant located in the 16500 block of Ramsey Road. At least one death was confirmed at the scene of the incident, and two other people have been airlifted to area hospitals in unknown condition.

It is unclear what caused the explosion and whether dangerous chemicals were released as a result of the blast. The Crosby Independent School District will not be releasing students from any campus until the current shelter in place is lifted. Channelview Independent School District is following suit “under an abundance of caution.”

Explosion Occurs Within Weeks of Deer Park Plant Fires

Less than two weeks ago, a shelter in place were issued for residents of Deer Park and Galena Park following massive fire at the Intercontinental Terminals Co. facility outside of Houston. The fire burned for a total of three days releasing dangerous levels of benzene into the air.

A miles-long plume of black smoke stretched across the sky following the fire and was visible in Houston.

Residents of Deer Park and Galena Park were urged to remain indoors and to close all doors, windows, and other sources of outside air. Additionally, residents were asked to turn off air conditioning and heating systems and close fireplace dampers to keep chemical vapors from entering their homes.

Channelview ISD was closed during that shelter in place order as well.
