One Dead, Two Missing, Several Injured in Wisconsin Corn Plant Explosion

At least one person is dead following an explosion at a corn milling plant in Columbia County, Wisconsin. Authorities say two others are still missing.

Authorities Work to Determined Origin of Wisconsin Plant Explosion

According to Reuters, the explosion occurred at the Didion Milling plant, located about 80 miles northwest of Milwaukee, at around 11 pm Wednesday. 16 employees were working at the plant when the explosion occurred.

Several people sustained injuries in the explosion and resulting fire and were transported via helicopter and ambulance to local hospitals. Two people were able to escape unharmed, and two others remain missing.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the explosion, and the identity of the deceased worker has not been released.

The following information was provided by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA):

  • 4,836 workers were killed on the job in 2015. This averages to more than 93 deaths a week or more than 13 deaths every day.
  • Of the 4,379 worker fatalities that occurred in private industry, 937 were associated with construction.
  • Among the leading causes of work-related deaths are:
    • Falls
    • Struck by object
    • Electrocutions
    • Caught-In/Between
