According to officers from the California Highway Patrol, the driver of an SUV involved in the accident has been identified as 19-year-old Lynnea Hernandez of Santa Cruz. Hernandez has been arrested for driving under the influence.
Hernandez was among a group of about 7 students who were heading to Big Sur for spring break.19-year-old Sarah Cameron was a passenger in the vehicle at the time of the accident and was arrested for destroying and concealing evidence. Investigators indicated that a witness had called in and said they saw Cameron hiding a bag in a nearby field.
Officials were able to find a bag filled with marijuana and a bag of ecstasy pills due to the tips by witnesses.
The accident involved two vehicles. The vehicle with the students crossed over into the northbound lane and hit an oncoming Mazda. The driver of the Mazda was killed at the time of the accident.
An investigation into the circumstances of the accident is ongoing.
