According to The Times-Picayune, a woman was killed and her passenger injured in an Interstate 10 crash on Friday afternoon in LaPlace, Louisiana.

Speed May Have Been a Factor in Crash

The driver, 27-year-old Markesha Williams, was taken to a local hospital and later died. The passenger, 30-year-old Rachelle Jackson, was taken to the hospital in critical condition, says State Police.

Although the accident remains under investigation, authorities told The Times-Picayune that they believe speeding may be the cause of the crash. The driver of the vehicle lost control of her 2009 Toyota Camry and crashed into a sign on Interstate 10.

According to authorities, it is unclear if seat belts were in use. In addition, a toxicology report is pending.

The accident occurred around 12:30 p.m.
