OSHA Investigates South Texas Construction Accident
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has launched an investigation into an accident in Alamo, Texas. A worker fell to his death in an accident at Sharyland Pioneer High School.
About the Sharyland Construction Accident
- According to the Monitor, OSHA staff met with the owner of the contracting company overseeing the construction of the new high school Tuesday.
- The agency is investigating the death of Juan Jose Gonzalez, 46, who fell 18 feet to his death while working on the gymnasium of the high school around 3 p.m. Monday.
- Gonzalez had been employed by a subcontractor, Texas H & H Contractors, based in Edinburg.
Construction Accident Statistics
- According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 4,383 workers died on the job in 2012 – this averages to be 84 deaths a week or nearly 12 deaths a day.
- Fatal injuries involving contractors accounted for 16 percent of all work related deaths in 2012.
- Four leading causes of fatal work injuries accounted for 435 deaths:
- Falls
- Struck by Object
- Electrocutions
- Caught-in/between
