Robert Melton, 48, was walking near the intersection of Independence Boulevard and Village Lake Drive when the accident happened. Melton attempted to cross the street when he was struck by a car passing through the intersection.
The car was driven by 38-year-old Wayne Eric Daniel, reports WCNC. Officials say Melton was crossing the road outside of a crosswalk when he was struck. In addition, the man was wearing dark colored clothing. Daniel was not impaired by alcohol or drugs at the time of the wreck, according to police.
After further investigation, police believed Daniel was speeding through the intersection in a careless, reckless manner. WCNC reports that Daniel was arrested and charged on Tuesday with involuntary manslaughter and reckless driving. Officials say the investigation is active and ongoing.
