Pedestrian Deaths Highest in 30 Years

Pedestrian deaths in traffic accidents were higher in 2018 than they’ve been in decades.

About the Pedestrian Death Statistic

According to NPR, in 2018 nearly 6,300 pedestrians died in traffic accidents in the U.S. This is the highest number in thirty years. Experts attribute the increase to smartphone use by both drivers and pedestrians, who use cellular data 4,000 percent more than they did in 2008. Another factor is the increasing number of drivers buying bigger cars, which creates a greater danger for pedestrians.

Five Pedestrian Safety Tips

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has several recommendations for pedestrian safety, including:

  • Avoid distraction from electronic devices
  • Follow the rules of the road
  • Walk on sidewalks whenever possible
  • Be visible at all times
  • Cross the street at crosswalks or intersections

Five Vehicle Safety Tips

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has several recommendations for staying safe when driving, including:

  • Never drink and drive
  • Avoid distraction and be mindful of motorcyclists, bicyclists, and pedestrians
  • Check for vehicle recalls
  • Keep an emergency repair and first aid kit accessible
  • Change lanes to give space to any law enforcement officers
