Pedestrian Killed in New Jersey Accident


A man is facing felony charges after fleeing the scene of a fatal pedestrian accident with the pedestrian lodged in his windshield.

About the Fatal Pedestrian Accident

On Monday, November 17th, 2014, In Ocean County, New Jersey, 61-year-old Kenneth Moeller of Lanoka Harbor died from injuries he received in highway accident that occurred a week prior.

Moeller was a pedestrian that was struck on a highway shoulder. In the accident, he became lodged in the vehicle’s windshield as the car continued to move.

The 33-year-old driver, Marcos Otrega, continued to driving with Moeller lodged in his windshield for a mile and a half before police finally stopped him.

He was charged with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident and causing serious bodily injury to another while under the influence. With Moellers death, Ortega is likely to face more serious charges. Ortega remains in jail with $150,000 cash bail.

Pedestrian Accident Statistics

  • According to the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recorded 4,743 pedestrian fatalities and 726 bicyclist fatalities in 2012.
