Police Officer Injured After Van Crashes into Two Cruisers

According to the Portland Press Herald, a police officer is hospitalized after two police cruisers are hit by a drunk driver in Yarmouth, Maine, on Sunday morning.

Details of the Motor Vehicle Crash

Two police officers were responding to an earlier truck crash on Interstate 295 in Yarmouth, closing northbound lanes to remove the vehicle from the roadway. The accident occurred at around 2:51 a.m. local time when a motorist in a minivan failed to stop for the road closure.

The Portland Press Herald reports that the minivan driver, Connor Fitzsimmons, drove through the closure and crashed into a Yarmouth and Freeport police cruiser. A Yarmouth police officer, Derek Lukas, was hurt in the wreck and taken to Maine Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. He would later be released.

Fitzsimmons was arrested by Cumberland police and taken to Cumberland County Jail. According to the Portland Press Herald, Fitzsimmons was charged with operating under the influence.
