Teen Killed in Rope Swing Accident

According to Greenville Online, a teenage girl died last Monday when she fell from a rope swing at a Christian Young Life camp on Sassafras Mountain in Carolina Point, South Carolina.

Details of the Rope Swing Accident

The sixteen-year-old girl was identified as Olivia Paige Grimes from Lakeland, Florida.  The accident occurred on Monday afternoon, according to Chief Deputy Creed Hashe.

The deputy claimed that Grimes was sitting on a pendulum rope swing with two other people at the camp. Grimes suddenly was detached from the swing and fell 120 feet off. She died on the scene.

She was a member of Oasis Community Church and was the daughter to Pastor Phil and Robyn.

More About Young Life Camp

The camp in South Carolina is only one of the 28 Young Life Camps across the nation. A Young Life spokeswoman said that every camp ride undergoes very strict protocol to enforce the safety of its passengers.

There are rope swings at 13 of their Young Life camps, which are all closed due to the accident. The Sherriff’s Department is currently investigating the accident at Carolina Point and why the supposedly regulated rope swing malfunctioned.

The Sherriff said that two supervisors were apparently supervising the ride at the time of the accident. Hashe expressed that the pendulum rope swing course will remain closed until the investigation is closed.

The South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation said the Young Life swing courses were not inspected and do not meet the regulations of an amusement ride. The department has sent workers to further inspect the devices.
