What Is Botulism?
Botulism is a serious and potentially fatal food poisoning often linked to improperly sterilized canned meats and other preserved foods. Upon infection, the toxin attacks the body’s nerves and can cause difficulty breathing, muscle paralysis, and death.
Symptoms of botulism usually start with weakness of the muscles that control the eyes, face, mouth, and throat. This weakness may spread to the neck, arms, torso, and legs. Botulism also can weaken the muscles involved in breathing, which can lead to difficulty breathing and even death.
If you display symptoms of botulism, whether you suspect you have eaten contaminated food or not, it is essential that you see your doctor or go to the emergency room immediately.
