According to the U.S. Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 87 more people have fallen ill due to salmonella contaminated beef products.
12 Million Pounds of Beef Recalled for Salmonella Contamination
JBS Tolleson Inc. has recalled more than 12 million pounds of beef products due to potential salmonella contamination. The products were distributed to major retailers across the nation including Wal-Mart, Sprouts, Sam’s Club, Kroger, and Fiesta mart.
So far, 333 people from 28 states have been sickened by the contaminated beef since August, 91 of whom had to be hospitalized.
The recalled beef was packaged between July 26 and September 7. Consumers should check their freezers for beef product with an establishment number EST. 267. Recalled beef products should be returned or discarded.
What Are Symptoms of Salmonella Infection?
Salmonella symptoms usually appear within 12 to 72 hours of consuming contaminated food and include:
- Abdominal cramps
- Blood in stool
Typically, symptoms will subside within seven days; however, hospitalization may be necessary depending on the severity of symptoms.
Children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems are at an increased risk of severe infection and death.
