Asher’s Recalls Candy Produced in Lewistown Facility

Asher’s Chocolates, a Pennsylvania-based chocolate and candy company, is issuing a voluntary recall on a variety of chocolates, chocolate bars, individually wrapped chocolates and other candies due to a possible salmonella contamination.

About the Asher’s Chocolates Candy Recall

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the presence of salmonella was revealed in a group of products produced at Asher’s Lewistown facility after routine testing.

Consumers who have purchased this product should not consume it. Consumers can return the product and receive a refund by contacting Asher’s customer service.

The recalled candy was distributed nationwide to retail stores, but no illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the recall.  According to Jeff Asher, President and CEO, Asher’s has never previously detected Salmonella in its testing in over 124 years of business.

Description of Asher’s Chocolates Candy Recall

The recall involves 41 candy products ranging from chocolate covered mini pretzels to milk chocolate potato chips. The complete list of recalled candy, including the product UPC and Lot #, can be found on the FDA website.

You can find the production code printed on the side of the label. Only production codes in this list are affected by the product recall. In addition, no products manufactured by C.A. Asher Inc. or Asher’s Chocolate of Souderton, PA are under a recall.

Information on Salmonella

According to the FDA, salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include fever, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. In rarer cases, more serious illnesses can occur including aneurysms, endocarditis and arthritis.
