Chevrolet Aveo Recall – Fire Risk

Tina Robinson5 years ago

General Motors has announced a recall of approximately 218,000 Chevrolet Aveo subcompact cars due to a potential fire hazard, according to CBS Detroit.

Description of the Chevy Aveo Recall

According to GM, the daytime running light module located in the dashboard can overheat, melt, and catch fire. The company is aware of an unspecified number of fires associated with the defect but knows of no injuries or deaths as a result. GM has said it is still developing a plan to correct the issue.

The recall affects Chevrolet Aveo model years 2004 to 2008.

GM Breaks Company Recall Record

Today’s recall brings the total number of cars in the U.S. recalled by GM to about 13.8 million vehicles, breaking the previous GM record of vehicles recalled in one year. The previous record was set in 2004 when the automaker recalled 10.75 million vehicles.

The increased pace of recall announcements are largely a result of GM’s efforts to head off any potential scandals like the ignition switch recall. GM has become the focus of intense scrutiny after it was learned the automaker delayed recalling the defective switches for more than a decade.

In February, about 2.6 million older compact cars including the Chevrolet Cobalt and Saturn Ion were recalled due to ignition switches that could cause engine stalls, brake failure, and other safety defects. GM has acknowledged 13 deaths linked to the faulty switches, but that count only includes front-impact crashes.
