Class Action Lawsuit Filed Against Ikea for Furniture-Related Deaths
Rebecca Ramsey3 weeks ago
A class action lawsuit has been filed against Ikea for marketing dangerous dressers and failing to provide refunds.
About the Ikea Lawsuit
According to Yahoo News, the lawsuit was filed on May 6, 2020, in Pennsylvania, on behalf of a Minnesota couple with two young children. The suit alleges that Ikea marketed and sold millions of dressers it knew were prone to dangerous tip-overs and then failed to issue adequate notifications and refunds.
The family that filed the suit had purchased two Ikea Malm dressers before they were recalled. According to their complaint, they attempted to return the dressers for a refund and were denied by the company in August 2018.
The law firm representing the couple said that the recall was “poorly executed, leaving millions of unsafe dressers in the bedrooms of children throughout the country.”
The class action suit is open to all consumers who purchased an Ikea dresser and were part of the 2016 and 2017 recall announcements.
Incidents of Unsafe Ikea Dressers
Ikea has been called out on several occasions for selling unsafe dressers that did not meet voluntary industry stability standards.
The Malm dresser line, especially, has been associated with the fatalities of five children. In 2017, 2-year-old Jozef Dudek, of Buena Park, California, was killed by an unsafe dresser. His family was later awarded a $46 million settlement from Ikea.
Not only have Ikea products been unstable, but their recalls are often ineffective. Advocacy groups agree that Ikea should more diligently reach consumers about important recall information.
The family that filed the suit is seeking full refunds for all plaintiffs. They desire to hold the company accountable for its negligent craftsmanship and ineffective recall terms. They also seek to protect future children from dangerously unstable products.
