CVS Nasal Spray Recalled for Potentially Deadly Bacteria
Product Quest Manufacturing, a Florida company, has voluntarily recalled nasal spray due to potential bacterial contamination, the Federal Food and Drug Administration announced August 8th.
Nasal Spray Contamination Could Be Deadly
According to reports, the recall involves a lot of CVS 12 Hour Sinus Relief Mist, which has been contaminated with a bacterium called Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The lot is #17389J.
Symptoms of the bacterium vary based on which part of the body becomes infected. According to the Centers for Disease Control, if the lungs become infected symptoms can cause pneumonia. Those with cystic fibrosis, a disease that causes damage to the lungs, digestive system, and other organs, are also at risk for life-threatening complications resulting from infection. The bacterium can also cause eye, ear, skin, and blood infections.
A pseudomonas infection will most likely, and severely affect those with weakened immune systems, potentially leading to death. Although an infection can be treated with antibiotics, the bacteria is becoming increasingly resistant to antibiotic treatment.
Thus far, according to Product Quest Manufacturing, there have been no reported infections due to the nasal spray that has been recalled.
Additional Information About Pseudomonas Aeruginosa
Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection is typically associated with hospitals; however, infection may also occur in health people exposed to contaminated water, such as in inadequately chlorinated hot tubs and swimming pools.
Infection is normally treated with antibiotics, but infections that occur outside of hospitals are becoming more difficult to treat due to increasing antibiotic resistance.
Laboratory testing may be used to see which antibiotics may be effective against resistant stratins.
