The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has expanded its recall of valsartan, a blood pressure drug that could be contaminated with a probably carcinogen.
About the Valsartan Recall
According to CBS News, Valsartan, a drug which treats high blood pressure and heart disease, was voluntarily recalled last month by the FDA. The recall has been issued due to the presence of N-nitrosodimethylamine, which has been shown to increase the risk of cancer in animals. The drug was manufactured by a pharmaceutical company in China, Zhejiang Huahai.
Since the initial recall, the FDA has implicated more products from other drug companies in the recall.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, N-nitrosodimethylamine is human carcinogen, meaning it causes cancer in humans. The chemical can be found in water supplies and food in very small amounts.
Although very small amounts are safe for humans, FDA scientists estimate that if 8,000 people took the highest dose of valsartan for four years, there may be one case of cancer.
However, doctors and the FDA advise those who take valarstan to continue taking the medication until their doctor prescribes a different medication. The suggested remedy is for those who take valarstan to talk to their pharmacist to find a brand that does not contain NDMA.
