Ford Recalls Nearly 1 Million Vehicles for Exploding Takata Airbag Inflators
Ford has recently recalled hundreds of thousands of vehicles worldwide due to flawed Takata airbags posing the risk of serious injury.
About the Ford Vehicle Recall
In the recent recall, Ford is planning to recall upwards of 953,000 vehicles due to the risk of injury. The automaker says the airbag inflator issue may occur on the passenger side.
The Takata inflators may spontaneously explode, shooting shrapnel throughout the vehicle. This is due to propellant degradation which can damage the structure of the airbag inflator There have been 23 reported deaths reported to date, due to the issue.
Ford urges consumers to take their vehicles to a Ford dealer to replace any faulty parts.
Description of the Recalled Vehicles
- The models recalled include the 2010 Ford Edge, Lincoln MKX, the 2010 and 2011 Mercury Milan, the 2010 to 2014 Ford Mustang, the 2010 and 2011 Ford Ranger, as well as the 2010 to 2012 Ford Fusion.
- These vehicles were sold through licensed Ford dealers worldwide.
- The faulty airbags on the passenger side may cause serious irreversible damage to the driver and passengers.
Exploding Takata Air Bags Linked to 23 Deaths
The Takata recalls deal with some 125 million vehicles worldwide that are equipped with faulty airbags that can explode on deployment, unleashing metal shrapnel into vehicle cabins. At least 42 million of the affected vehicles were sold in the United States.
So far, 23 deaths and hundreds of injuries have been linked to faulty airbag inflators, most of which have occurred in the U.S.
The defect led Takata to file for bankruptcy protection in June, allowing it to sell its non-airbag inflator business to Key Safety Systems, a unit of China’s Ningo Joyson Electric Corp.
As of July, less than half of the affected vehicles had been repaired.
In February, Ford issued a “stop driving” warning to 35,000 Ford Ranger and Mazda B-Series owners.
