Hyundai Recalls 44,000 Vehicles, Steering Wheels May Detach
Hyundai has issued a steering column recall for nearly 44,000 vehicles after determining the vehicles’ steering wheels may detach from the steering column while the vehicles are being driven, drastically increasing the risks of crash and injury.
Details of the Hyundai Steering Wheel Defect
According to Automotive News, the steering wheel assembly may break, which may result in the steering wheel detaching from the steering column even when the vehicle is in motion.
In a statement, Hyundai acknowledged the issue and traced the defect back to faulty steering wheel assemblies from “a certain suspect production lot from the supplier.” The automaker added that “mold temperature may have increased during the molding process” and caused damage to certain steering wheel assemblies.
Dealers will inspect steering wheel hub assemblies in recalled vehicles and replace the steering wheel assemblies if necessary.
Owners of the recalled steering wheels and Hyundai vehicles will be notified by mail beginning in mid-March.
Vehicles Included in the Hyundai Recall
The recall affects 43,941 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe and Santa Fe Sport crossovers.
Included in the Hyundai steering wheel recall are 12,574 of the Santa Fe vehicles were produced between June and December in South Korea, 13,749 Santa Fe Sports produced between July and October at Hyundai’s Alabama plant, and 17,618 Santa Fe Sports produced between August and October at Kia’s Georgia plant.
An additional 8,456 vehicles were recalled in Canada.
