Pontiac Vibe Hatchbacks Added to General Motors’ Takata Recall

Morgan Crider4 years ago

243,000 compact hatchbacks in Canada and the United States have been recalled due to the explosive Takata air bags.

Details About the Pontiac Vibe Recall

According to Fox Business, on June 19th, Pontiac Vibe hatchbacks were added to General Motors’ massive recall of vehicles equipped with Takata air bags. The air bags recall is brought on by reports of air bags deploying with too much force, rupturing, and ejecting sharp metal fragments.

General Motors has recalled all Pontiac Vibes made from 2003 to 2007, effectively covering all vehicles that may have the faulty air bag.

The Pontiac Vibe was designed by Toyota and made in a jointly owned factory in California. It mirrors the design of the Toyota Matrix, which was one of the vehicles that were recalled earlier due to the Takata airbags as well.

Overview Takata Airbag Recall

The Takata airbag inflators are hazardous due to their ability to blow apart a metal canister in the vehicle. Shrapnel is sent flying into the passenger compartment because of the explosion.

Takata Corp. of Japan announced in May that they would be doubling the size of the air bag inflator recall to 33.8 million, which has officially made it the largest automotive recall in U.S. history.

There have been eight reported deaths and over a 100 injuries in relation to the Takata airbag so far.
