Vape pens and e-cigarettes are marketed as the healthier and safer substitute to cigarettes because they do not produce harmful smoke and they are less addictive.
Many smokers transition to vaping to lessen their health risk or to gradually abate nicotine addiction.
However, ex-smokers are not only people who use e-cigarettes. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, many young people vape as well. Their records show that 3.6 million middle and high school students used e-cigarettes in 2018—an increase of about 1.5 million from the year before.
Vape Pen Risks
Though vape pens do not have many of the disease dangers that normal cigarettes produce, they are not altogether free from risks. E-cigarettes use lithium-ion batteries that have been deemed unsafe by the U.S. Fire Administration because of their likelihood to overheat and explode.
According to a report published last year in BMJ Journals, about 2,035 explosion and burn injuries were caused by e-cigarettes between 2015 and 2017.
This issue is still ongoing, as CNN has reported on several recent incidents of explosions that caused burns, blindness, or death.
The Food and Drug Administration is exploring product standards to address this problem. Until these issues are resolved, people who use vape pens should be extremely cautious and make sure that their pens do not overheat.
