Whole Foods Issues Mass Recall- Over 70 Food Items Contaminated

On November 6th, supermarket chain Whole Foods issued a massive recall of over seventy products due to contamination of vegetables by the food borne infectious bacteria, Listeria.
About the Whole Foods Recall
According to the reports, it is believed that the contamination was caused by the plastic wrappings by Mann Packing. Items recalled included products from a variety of store departments; salad bar, hot bar, catering, food packed in store, as well as specialty Chef’s case items.
Contaminated items potentially reached shelves in eight states, Kansas, Colorado, Idaho, New Mexico, Connecticut, New York, Florida, Tennessee, and North Carolina, between October 10th and November 4th of this year.
As of yet, there have been no reported cases of illness caused by the Listeria virus, but it is possible that contaminated products could have been consumed. Some symptoms are fevers, muscle aches, diarrhea, and headaches.
Listeria is a food borne pathogen. Many people infected with Listeriosis often do not know they have been and don’t experience symptoms, but for some populations Listeriosis can be deadly. The pathogen is a huge risk for immunosuppressed individuals and pregnant women. Women who are pregnant are 10 times more likely to become infected by Listeria.
To err on the side of caution, if you think you have an opened product which could have been affected, it is advised to throw it out. For unopened products, returns can be made to Whole Foods with appropriate proof of purchase.
