Recall Recap: April’s 5 Biggest Auto Recalls

Auto recalls have been trending higher and higher each year, with major recalls like the those for vehicles equipped with GM’s faulty ignition switches and Takata’s exploding airbags affecting tens of million of cars, pickups, and SUVs.

Defective vehicles create an unnecessary and entirely preventable risks for motorists. At such, Thomas J. Henry urges all vehicle owners to keep up to date on recalls. Here are the largest five recalls issued for automobile for the month of April.

  1. Audi MDX Recall

# of Vehicle Recalled: 322,000

Models Affected:

  • 2014-2019 Acura MDX
  • 2014-2019 MDX Sport Hybrid

Problem:

The recall involves moisture finding its way into tailgate lid lights, potentially disabling taillights completely. The absence of taillights can greatly increase the risk of a rear-end accident, especially in situations where a sudden stop is necessary. To make matter worse, replacing taillights would not resolve the issue.

As a fix, Audi will modify the tailgate lid lights and install additional gaskets. Work will be completed free of charge.

  1. Dodge Dart Recall

# of Vehicle Recalled: 298,000

Models Affected:

  • 2013-2016 Dodge Dart

Problem:

The Dodge Dart recall involves potential failures in the vehicles’ shifter cable bushing. The cable can detach from the transmission, preventing drivers from shifting correctly. The defect can also cause roll away accidents even if the driver places the vehicle in “Park.”

Dealers will replace the defective part free of charge. Owners can expect to receive notices beginning at the end of May.

# of Vehicle Recalled: 184,500

Models Affected:

  • 2006 BMW 3 Series
  • 2006 BMW 5 Series
  • 2006 BMW Z4

Problem:

BMW models have been recalled for issues with the positive crankcase ventilation valve. The heater in the valve may short-circuit, causing parts within the valve to melt. This problem result in vehicle fires and can only be repaired through a complete replacement of the positive crankcase ventilation valve.

  1. Chevrolet Trax Recall

# of Vehicle Recalled: 113,000

Models Affected:

  • 2017-2019 Chevrolet Trax

Problem:

A joint on one or both of the front lower-control arms may be improperly welded and may break. Failure could cause the attached front wheel to jut outward, resulting in decreased handling and damage. Dealers will take corrective action on improperly welded parts free of charge.

  1. Acura and Honda Recalls

# of Vehicle Recalled: 94,000

  • 2018-2019 Acura MDX
