Runner in Sharon, Mass. Killed by Driver with Suspended License

Massachusetts authorities have filed charges against a driver who was involved in a fatal accident on Sunday. According to Fox News Boston, the driver’s SUV allegedly struck and killed a young woman out for a run.

About the Fatal Sharon Accident

According to police, Haley Cremer, 20, was out for a run when she was struck and killed by an SUV in Sharon, Mass. Cremer was taken to Norwood Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The accident happened at approximately 4:30 p.m. near the intersection of Hampton Road and Dogwood Road.

The driver of the SUV, Jeffrey Bickoff, 40, has been charged with motor vehicle homicide/negligent operation, operating after suspension of a license, marked lanes, and speeding.

Fox News reported Bickoff had his license suspended on June 8 after being involved in crashes on March 3 and Dec. 12 of 2013. His license had also been suspended on April 19 for driving without a registration and invalid inspection sticker on Jan. 31.

Mass. State Police and Sharon police are investigating the accident.

Pedestrian Injury Statistics

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recorded 4,743 pedestrian fatalities and 76,000 pedestrian injuries in the U.S. as a result of traffic crashes in 2012. Those fatalities represented a 6 percent increase from 2011. Pedestrian deaths in 2012 represented 14 percent of all motor vehicle accident fatalities. Additionally, NHTSA observed that more than two-thirds of pedestrian fatalities occurred at non-intersections, and 89 percent of pedestrian fatalities occurred during normal weather conditions.
