632 Pedestrian Deaths in Texas Last Year Prompts State-Wide Safety Initiative

Rebecca Ramsey3 months ago

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is launching their a new safety campaign in response data showing that an astounding 632 pedestrian deaths were recorded in Texas last year. The “Be Safe. Drive Smart” campaign will urge drivers and pedestrians to “slow down, stay alert, and obey traffic laws to increase their safety.”

About the “Be Safe. Drive Smart.” Pedestrian Safety Campaign

According to TxDOT’s website, “Be Safe. Drive Smart.” is a year-long public education and awareness effort aimed at saving lives and reducing crashes.

TxDOT began this state-wide initiative in response to the large number of deaths reported in Texas every year due to traffic accidents. In 2018, a total of 632 deaths in 5,694 traffic crashes were recorded. Of those accidents, 65 fatalities and 712 accidents happened in San Antonio alone.

Pedestrian Safety Tips for Drivers

TxDOT’s campaign provides several tips to help keep pedestrians safe. The following safe driving tips were taken from the campaign website.

  • Be courteous to other drivers
  • Pay attention, focus 100% on driving
  • When behind the wheel, put the phone away or turn it off
  • Drive a safe speed and adjust based upon traffic, road and weather conditions
  • Stop for all stop signs and red lights
  • Pass carefully when it’s legal and safe
  • Never drive after drinking alcohol or taking other drugs
  • Avoid medications that cause drowsiness
  • Slow down or move over for flashing lights; law enforcement vehicles, emergency vehicles, tow trucks or other vehicles that may be stopped on the side of the road
  • Yield the right of way to pedestrians when turning
  • Reduce speed when approaching crosswalks and stop for pedestrians.

Safety Tips for Pedestrians

  • Use sidewalks whenever they’re available. If there’s no sidewalk, walk on the left side of the road facing traffic.
  • Always cross at intersections or marked crosswalks. Look left, then right, then left again before proceeding.
  • Make eye contact with drivers before crossing the street. Never assume a driver sees you.
  • Be visible. Wear something light or reflective after dark.
  • Don’t be distracted by devices that take your eyes and ears off the road.
  • As a passenger, get in or out of a vehicle on the curb side of the street.
